Help improve the lives of people living with dementia

Dementia Action Week 2019 [] takes place between Monday 20 and Sunday 26 May.

THURROCK Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is part of Thurrock Dementia Action Alliance. Over the next week the CCG will be promoting ways to take action on dementia.

Irene Lewsey, Head of Transformation, said: “Almost all of us know someone affected by dementia – a family member, a friend, a neighbour or a colleague. This Dementia Action Week, find out more about how our communities, as well as ourselves as individuals, can adapt to make improvements to the lives of those of us living with dementia.”

People living with dementia often report feeling cut off from their community, the breakdown of friendships and a general feeling that they are facing the condition alone.

We can all take action to create more supportive environments to support those with dementia. One of the best ways we can all help is to take the time to visit someone we know who has dementia. The Alzheimer’s Society has developed a booklet that gives tips on having a conversation with a person with dementia. Click the link below to download:

Join us in Dementia Week for a number of events in Thurrock

We will be supporting a number of events in Thurrock over Dementia Action Week, where you can get more information. Find out more about dementia, the services in Thurrock and how you can be more dementia friendly:

· From 1pm on Tuesday 21 May, a “walk with us” we will be taking part in a short walk from the Civic Offices, New Rd, Grays RM17 6SL. Come along and ask any questions you might have about dementia.

· On Thursday 23 May, you can come along to the Central Atrium in Lakeside from 10am to 5pm. You can have a chat about information and support in Thurrock.

· On Friday 24 May, a Garden Party will take place from 12pm – 3pm at Thurrock Hospital Garden, RM16 2PX. Speak to support services in your area and see demonstrations from both Singing For The Brain Group and the Garden Group.

Irene Lewsey, Head of Transformation, continued: “We are passionate in Thurrock about supporting people with dementia. Everything from early diagnosis to support and packages of care to make living with dementia as manageable as possible for the person and their families. Being more supportive to those with dementia shouldn’t just be for one week a year, we should aim to be more dementia friendly every day.
