Join the space race at Thurrock libraries this summer

CHILDREN of all ages can take part in an out-of-this-world adventure as the 2019 Summer Reading Challenge returns to Thurrock this month.

From Saturday 13 July to Saturday 14 September, pre-schoolers, children and young adults can join in this year’s challenge, Space Chase, at libraries in Aveley, Belhus, Blackshots, Chadwell, Corringham, East Tilbury, Grays, Stanford-le-Hope and Tilbury.

The free challenge encourages children of all reading abilities to visit their local library, borrow and read any six library books over the summer school holidays. For each book read, there is a special sticker to be collected – and some are smelly! Children will also receive a certificate and medal for completing the challenge.

Cllr Deborah Huelin, Cabinet Member for Central Services and Communities, said: “Reading not only benefits our children’s education, but it helps to keep them entertained during the holidays and taps into their creativity, knowledge and sense of adventure.

“This year’s theme, which is inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing in July 1969, is particularly exciting and I’m sure it will get young people in the borough thinking about the wonders of space.

“There’s plenty of ways that children can get involved thanks to the variety of audiobook and paperback options available. I hope the challenge will inspire children and young adults of all ages to visit their local library and take part.”
