Thurrock Council continue with attacks on press with “fake news” jibe at Gazette

THURROCK Council’s poor relationship with the local press took another backward step as the leader claimed a letter in the Thurrock Gazette was an example of “fake news”.

A letter which appeared in a local paper said that Thurrock Council had ‘sanctioned’ deals to sell off part of Usk Road Park and Kenningtons School playing field, both in Aveley.

Slamming the letter and its publication Cllr Gledhill said: “This is fake news of the highest order. There is no truth to the claims made in this letter and I can categorically state that there are no plans to sell the park or build homes on these sites at all.

“It is completely irresponsible that this should have been published at all. This letter has created real concerns amongst the local community based on nothing more than claims made anonymously through the letter pages of a local newspaper.

“Let me be completely clear about this: there are no plans that the council is aware of for housing to be built on these sites.”
