Young people invited to SailThurrock

YOUNG people in Thurrock are invited to get on the water and to celebrate living in one of the most important maritime boroughs in the country. Hot on the heels of the successful summer programme, Thurrock Yacht Club is proud to be hosting another round of the acclaimed SailThurrock programme in the October half term break which runs from 28th October to 1st November.

SailThurrock is run in conjunction with Grangewaters Outdoor Education centre and has benefited from funding through Active Thurrock. It introduces young people to the sport of sailing, in a safe and controlled environment at Grangewaters Outdoor Education Centre, using the Royal Yachting Association’s Onboard programme as a basis for the activities.

The scheme is open to young people from Thurrock aged 8 years old and up, and no previous sailing experience is required.

Murray James, project lead for SailThurrock said, “if there is one sport that should be associated with Thurrock it is sailing. Our borough has desperately high levels of inactivity and associated conditions such as obesity. Research shows that as well as increasing physical fitness, sailing also has significant mental health benefits, but most of all it is fun, exciting, and accessible sport. We encourage the youth of Thurrock to get involved.”
