Lucy Mitchell is among the group of 50 apprentices who are currently participating in the Amazon Apprenticeship Programme through the fulfilment centre in Tilbury.

Lucy (22), from Laindon, is studying Automation Engineering as part of Amazon’s Apprenticeship Programme and is currently putting the theory she’s learning at Tameside College into practice at the local fulfilment centre.

Speaking on the Amazon Apprenticeship Programme, Lucy said:

“When I was growing up, I didn’t have a dream career in mind but I’ve always been interested in solving problems. During my A-Levels, I applied for a place on a biomedical science degree but eventually decided that while I did want to get a degree, I didn’t want to go down the traditional university route.

“That’s when the Amazon Apprenticeship Programme jumped out at me. Amazon seemed like a really cool place to work and the programme offers a mix of theory and practical learning, so I applied.

“I’m so glad I did, because I’ve had a great experience on the programme. Every day is really different and getting the chance to work with such highly skilled engineers is a big bonus for me because they really take the time to help me.

“My role is to make improvements and monitor developments in the Tilbury fulfilment centre and every day we ask ourselves – how can we make things better? Different problems arise every day and the opportunity to fix them gives me a great buzz.

“I will complete my apprenticeship in 2022, when I will become a fully qualified automation engineer. I’d definitely recommend doing an apprenticeship to anyone. The advice I’d give someone who is thinking about doing an apprenticeship is to take your time, do your research and pick a company and job that you’re really interested in. That’s what I did and it’s been great for me.”

Amazon Tilbury General Manager, Sertac Yilmaz, will guide the apprentices in their new roles at Amazon and help them settle in.

He said: “It’s great to welcome Lucy and the apprentices to Amazon in Tilbury. The apprentices will now take the next step on the career ladder, teaming up with our established engineers, IT and operations managers to learn about working at Amazon. Gaining practical knowledge of the role while learning is invaluable and also helps our apprentices learn how to work as a team. Above all else, they’re going to have a great time and will have a chance to join in with all of the fun events that we have at Amazon throughout the year.”

Amazon’s Apprenticeship schemes are designed to suit candidates with a range of experience, from those with life skills to school leavers who are 18+ with GCSEs or A-levels.
