Works commence on Grays two-way system

A TWO-way system is set to be reintroduced on Orsett Road to help improve the transport network in Grays.

Engineering works have commenced between the junction of Derby Road and Stanley Road as part of a wider transport strategy for the town centre to help make Grays safer and more accessible, promoting job creation and access to skills and learning.

The works are taking place following feedback from residents and businesses which identified the need to replace the existing one-way system. As part of this programme of works, Crown Road has recently been made into a two-way system and can be used as an alternative route.

The Orsett Road two-way system is planned to be installed by spring 2020; shortly followed by a real time responsive traffic control system at the junctions of Derby Road and Clarence Road; Stanley Road and Clarence Road; Stanley Road and Orsett Road; and Orsett Road and Derby Road.

Temporary pedestrian and traffic management will be put in place throughout the duration of the works to safeguard the public and the contractor’s operatives. Existing traffic signals will be replaced by temporary signals.

Works will break for Christmas before resuming in the New Year and will also cease throughout the duration of the Remembrance Sunday event in the town centre.

Leader of Thurrock Council, Cllr Rob Gledhill, said: “Grays is an important town which has a key role in the borough’s economy and this section of the road network is vital to the free-flow of traffic and improved access to and through the town centre.

Every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience including halting works for the Remembrance weekend and for five weeks at the end of November, to avoid disruption over the peak Christmas shopping period.”
