Painted poppies honour Thurrock’s fallen for Armistice Day

SPECIAL commemorative poppies have been painted near war memorials across Thurrock to mark the Remembrance period.

Thurrock Council and contractor Henderson and Taylor painted the poignant road and pavement markings for Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day near local memorials including:

Grays War Memorial
Grays Town Park
West Thurrock Memorial Ground
North Stifford Church
Rectory Road, Orsett
Aveley War Memorial
South Ockendon War Memorial
Civic Square, Tilbury
Chadwell Road (Turps Corner), Grays

Leader of Thurrock Council, Cllr Rob Gledhill, said: “I’m delighted that we have been able to create this fitting tribute to honour the Thurrock men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and freedom. Thank you to Henderson and Taylor for their support.

“Although we can’t pay our respects like in previous years, we can still honour our military and civilian men and women privately and safely by following national government measures. I encourage everyone to stand on their doorstep on Armistice Day on Wednesday 11 November at 11am for the two-minute silence, pay tribute at home or virtually and support the RBL Poppy Appeal so that we can ensure their contribution will never be forgotten.”
