Thurrock Yacht Club fly the flags for Windrush

THURROCK Yacht Club have raised a commemorative hoist of flags at their club base in Grays to commemorate the disembarkation of the Empire Windrush passengers on 22nd of June 1948. The colourful hoist comprises the modern national flags of countries of many of the immigrants, as well as a banner provided by the Thurrock 100 festival.

Club representative Murray James said “We are so proud to be able to celebrate the arrival of the original Windrush generation in our club’s own 75th year. Their arrival was a significant piece of our local maritime history, and we hope that our contribution to local Windrush celebrations reflects in some small way the colour and vibrancy they brought to build the Great Britain we know today.”

The flags went up on Monday to mark the eve of Windrush Day, and will stay up until Sunday. They can be viewed from anywhere along the Grays sea wall.
