PLANS for almost 100 new homes and a sports centre in Corringham are to be considered by councillors again.

An application by Craythus Ltd to build four blocks containing 95 flats on the site of The Springhouse in Springhouse Road was deferred in June over concerns on adequate parking spaces but is now recommended for approval.

The two and four-storey blocks will have 55 one-bedroom homes and 40 two-bedroom homes and 34 of the units will be affordable.

The homes development would fund a new sports and social club and will have restaurant, gym and studio areas as well as a bowls pavilion and green. There will be a further 70 parking spaces for the club.

The ground floor of the two-storey building would comprise of a badminton court, a main bar, a family bar, reception, office, toilets, changing rooms, a cellar and bin store.

The first floor would comprise of a function room, a restaurant, a kitchen, a snooker room and toilets.

The council received 20 letters of objection and 40 in support of the application.

Concerns raised included overdevelopment, loss of green spaces and loss of privacy.

Parking spaces have been increased by 22 spaces to 120.

A report to councillors said the revised parking provision complies with the council’s parking standards. The increased parking spaces have been arranged to ensure that areas of green space between the apartment blocks would be retained as landscaped community space.

Recommending the much-needed homes for approval, a report by planning officers said the proposal would allow for the replacement of the existing and ageing sports facilities and would allow for significant improvements when compared to the existing facilities.

Adding: “The proposal would make better use of the space at the site and would also allow for residential development on part of the site which is necessary as enabling development to fund the new sports centre and its uses.”

Thurrock Council’s planning committee will consider the plans on Thursday.
