Education collaboration reaches new heights as Gateway Academy students lead teaching programme

TWENTY-three Year 10 students from the Gateway Academy are mentoring some of the Gateway Learning Community’s Year 6 students in mathematics. The Year 10 students, many of whom are re-visiting the primary schools they previously attended, are showing great professionalism and commitment in supporting the younger students with their learning.

‘It is wonderful to see our students working so hard to share their passion and skills with their younger peers, inspiring the next generation of mathematicians,’ said Lisa Kelly, Assistant Head, responsible for Maths and Science, one of two national award-winning teachers at The Gateway.

The Gateway students have really taken to the job, and their enthusiasm is only matched by that of the primary students, who are delighted to be learning from such good role-models! One of the teachers commented: ‘They made it comfortable, enjoyable and relaxed for the pupils. Even from the first session, you can see them building relationships and building confidence. I was so impressed with their teaching skills, they were really well prepped!’

The hard-working staff in Tilbury Pioneer Academy, Lansdowne Primary Academy, Herringham Primary Academy and The Gateway Primary Free School have all supported the project, preparing resources and giving up time after school to support the learning, making maths exciting has been a real team effort! The project has been so successful that extending it to more children in other year groups is being considered – watch this space….
