A VETERAN and much respected newspaper editor is set to stand as a candidate in local elections in May.
Neil Speight has thrown his hat into the ring in the ward of Stanford West.
A journalist for over 40 years, he has been editor of the Thurrock Gazette, Thurrock Enquirer and is presently editor of Thurrock Nub News.
In his time, fellow journalists hail his work in examining the workings of local democracy.
A few years ago, Mr Speight passionately felt that that when it came to its investments in solar farms, there was something not quite right at Thurrock Council.
Whilst many others would have opted for a quieter life, Neil continued to campaign and campaign to know the truth, to shine a light on what had happened to hard working tax payers money.
The consequences are for all to see.
Mr Speight’s campaign is based on “honesty, integrity, common sense and accountability”
He has lived in the ward for close to twenty years.
The councillor who is scheduled to be defending the seat is Conservative councillor, Shane Hebb, who was the portfolio holder for finance when the deals that have landed Thurrock Council in £1.5 billion in debt took place.
In many ways, Neil is a mixture between Martin Bell and the other Independent candidates across the borough.
