Essex Police issue statement over Golliwog complaint at White Hart pub in Grays

ESSEX Police has issued a statement over their seizure of a number of Golliwog dolls at the White Hart pub in Grays.

An Essex Police spokesperson said: “We are investigating an allegation of a hate crime in Grays.

The report was made to us on 24 February after a member of the public reported being distressed after attending a venue off Argent Street.

The investigation is being carried out under Section 4(a) of the Public Order Act 1986 and Section 31 of the Crime and Disorder Act 1998.

We have regularly discussed the progression of this case with the Crown Prosecution Service and on Tuesday 4 April, five officers visited a location off Argent Street, Grays, and seized several items in connection with that investigation.

No one has been arrested or charged in connection with the investigation and our enquiries are ongoing.

The force is proud of the work we do prevent crime, tackle offenders and build trust and confidence in all our communities.

“We are aware some elements of the media have reported that Essex Police has been contacted directly by the Home Secretary in relation to this investigation. At the time of writing, this is categorically not true. As a result, we would ask all media reporting this to amend their news reports immediately.

“In addition, as is the case in all investigations across every police force, we maintain operational independence from the Home Office which ensures that every investigation is carried out without fear or favour”.

  1. Perhaps I have the pub wrong but a friend and I, prior to the pandemic, had lunch there due to the positive comments regarding the quality of their food.

I noticed, when ordering at the bar a range of small golliwog soft toys. There were comments then in the local papers about the suitability of such toys.

Why then are Essex Police now issuing statements after such a delay. Surely if there was a problem many years ago the police then would have issued a request that if the toys were causing alarm and distress, after a given time the toys should be removed by the Police from the premises. Why wasn’t this dealt with in a timely manner?

  2. The police showed they are against the people when they threatened taxpayers who were simply going about their lives during covid. Now they’re threatening people for not collecting the proper type of toy.

  3. Who is so lily-livered they get offended by some old dolls?
Police should have told the dumbell to grow up and stop wasting police time!

  4. Thurrock council would be well advised to consider the potential impact of vicarious liability for providing licenses to publicans that practice racial discrimination. They probably won’t want to have to explain to their constituents why they are prepared to waste taxpayers money fighting court cases to defend racists rather than doing the job they should be doing and that is ensuring the pub trade is run by decent people.

    There is a huge

  5. It’s quite clear – we are told by our Leaders that all gollys, including gollywogs, should be arrested and detained in the gollowog concentration camp at Skegness until His majesty’s pleasure be known – External Glory to all Gollowogs at this time of national oppression. They shall be vindicated in the final victory over the forces of oppression and reaction. Final crushing victory will come to the Patriotic Front for the Liberation of Gollywogs.
