Jack Petchey Foundation recognises young people from Thurrock for amazing achievements

THE Jack Petchey Foundation has launched the Jack Petchey Environmental Award Awards to recognise young people from London and Essex doing great things for the environment in Thurrock.

Members of the public are invited to nominate a young person they know via the Foundation’s website https://www.jackpetcheyfoundation.org.uk/opportunities/jack-petchey-environmental-award/. Winners will be awarded a special certificate, badge and a letter from Sir Jack Petchey himself, in recognition of their commitment to building a greener future. 

Jack Petchey Environmental Award will be awarded throughout summer until October to keep young people motivated and celebrate their environmental contributions to society.

The most recent winners are Efe Donkor,14, from Thurrock.

Efe has been awarded the Jack Petchey Environmental Award for her hard work and commitment to her school’s eco-committeeat Grays Convent High School ). She attends weekly meetings, which entail a variety of different responsibilities, including managing and running the recycling hub within the school playground, helping to create eco-projects such as a ‘Plastic-to-Fantastica™’  mural, maintaining the vegetable garden and assisting on the annual litter pick event. 

In July 2022, the school earned a Green Flag Award, which Grays Convent High School would not have been able to achieve without her help. She is always happy to give up her time after school to water their vegetable garden, plant seeds, and collect paper and plastic from students, staff, and classrooms to be recycled effectively.

Efe Donkor said:

“Winning a Jack Petchey Environmental Award is surreal. I am able to learn more about the environment that I live in, and I have the opportunity to make the place that we live in better. I am beyond thankful for this amazing experience and the resources  that I have been given to learn to understand about where I live and how to treat it correctly.”

Goda Budenaite,14, from Thurrock

Upon receiving the award, Sahejpreet Saini said:

“Always be motivated! I am so thankful and grateful for this opportunity that has been given to me.In life,always believe in yourself, stay motivated and work hard, because if you will be successful, and as Sir Jack Petchey said, if you think you can, you can.”Thank you for this chance to help the community.”

Gemma Juma, Chief Executive Officer of the Jack Petchey Foundation said: “At the Jack Petchey Foundation, young people inspire us all the time with the incredible work they do. We want to recognise more young people across London and Essex doing inspirational things to improve their local environment. We hope these Environmental Awards will motivate others and showcase the positive things young people do every day to help create a sustainable future.”

A young person can be nominated for any actions that make a positive impact on their local environment.  These could include: volunteering in a community garden or for an environmental charity, taking part in a community clean-up (e.g. litter picking), starting an environmental initiative at their school or youth group, promoting the protection of the environment and any other projects where they have been positively impacting the environment.
