Football: Brave Aveley bow out of FA Cup

AVELEY’S brave FA Cup challenge against National League high-fliers Barnet finally ran out of steam at the Hive on Tuesday evening (17 October) reports the Thurrock Nub News.

The Millers showed remarkable resilience on Saturday in the first encounter when they came back from two goals down and being reduced to nine men but in the closing third of the replay Barnet turned up the gas and three late goals secured a big margin of victory that wasn’t really a reflection of the credit Danny Scopes’ side deserved.

They did make a bright start with Alex Hernandez and Jon Benton both testing home keeper Laurie Walker but Bees settled to their task and after a couple of scares for Millers, which included a goalline clearance from Siju Odelusi, Nicke Kabama gave Barnet a 38th minute lead when he got in behind the Millers defence and produced an accompomlished finish.

Millers held their own against the full-timers but eventually they were undone and Kabama added his second with a headed finish from a free kick on 71 minutes.

The hat-trick goal from the striker, courtesy of a brilliant chip, followed five minutes later to end any hopes of a second Millers comeback and Harry Pritchard added a fourth for the home side with a header in added time to secure a trip to National League North Curzon Ashton in the First Round proper.

Millers at least had the consolation of picking up £3,125 losing prizemoney, a share of the gate from last night’s match – which was a somewhat disappointing 671, despite an impressive 170 travelling fans from Aveley! There were 919 at Parkside on Saturday.

Barnet manager Dean Brennan said the game played out how he expected, saying: “We knew they would tire, they are part time and it was a professional performance from us.

“However, it was a great performance by Aveley, they got down the sides and had a go at us, I have been very impressed by them and I think they will do well in the National League South.”
