Hilarious interactive opera for schools comes to Grays

THE English Touring Opera will present their educational opera, ‘The Great Stink’, for 7–11-
year-olds, at the Civic Hall, Grays, this Tuesday, 23rd April. This is part of a special offer from

The Royal Opera House to schools in the Thurrock borough, as this year celebrates the 10th
anniversary of the ROH Thurrock Trailblazer programme.

Over 400 students and their teachers combined from schools including; Purfleet Primary,
Beacon Hill Academy, South West Essex Community Education Trust: Deneholm , Stifford
Clays and Chadwell St Mary – join together to explore themes of our time.

The Great Stink is set in London in the summer of 1858, and takes pupils on a journey through
the capital’s sewage crisis and asks questions about water pollution and the way humans
dispose of sewage today.

Brought to life with singers, instrumentalists, puppets, and interactive moments children will get
to meet Queen Victoria, Chancellor of the Exchequer Disraeli, and even the Thames himself.

Written by Hannah Khalil and composed by Omar Shahryar, The Great Stink is the second in
ETO’s series of operas about climate change and the environment.
