USP College: Winning return to competing for netball girls

A SPORTS team have made a winning return after a four-year break – scooping a league title.

USP College Palmer’s Campus, in Grays, returned to competitive netball this year, having had a four-year break due to the pandemic.

The college – including its Seevic Campus in Benfleet – offers students an opportunity to compete at the highest level in netball, football, basketball and rugby with its Storm Sport Academy.

Storm netball students compete in the AoC South East Region League after completing trials at the college.

Students can study any subject alongside building their sporting career, or use a sport course as a physical outlet to their studies.

This year, the students from Palmer’s Campus returned to competing in the AoC Sport East Netball League C South – winning all eight of their matches and becoming league champions.

Bethany King, teacher of sport, said: “The team has been able to achieve this success due to their hard work, determination and team spirit. The girls all support each other and have motivated and pushed each other to their success.

“I am so proud of what the girls have achieved. They have worked so hard and put in an outstanding amount of effort to make the team as successful as they have been.

“This puts the girls in a great opportunity to carry on their sport if they are going to university and is something they can talk about proudly.

“We are hoping that with the success of our team this year it will encourage new students join us and continue on this success.”

Abbie, captain of the netball team, who studies BTEC Level 3 Sports Coaching & Development, from Grays, said: “I am so proud of the team, winning the league and being undefeated as the first netball team in the last four years.”

Athletes keen to explore their talents and future in netball, rugby, basketball or football should visit uspcollege.ac.uk/life-at-college/sports/ for more information about trials and the application process.
