The Importance of Maintaining Your Aircon

British summertime is fast approaching and as the temperature rises, aircon is more than just a luxury on the hot roads. During a summer heatwave, aircon can be a lifesaver and is a must-have car feature that many drivers would be lost without.

Just like any other part of your car though, your air conditioning system needs some maintenance to function properly. Without it, these are the types of issues you could encounter:

Bad Smells

There is nothing that can ruin a relaxing car journey quite like a bad smell. If you detect a musty odour in your vehicle, your AC might be the culprit. The aircon filter catches dust, pollen and allergens before they enter your car and improves the air quality inside the vehicle.

A dirty or clogged filter restricts airflow and can even make you ill so be sure to replace the filter regularly. It’s a simple and affordable way to ensure filtered, clean air.

Lukewarm Air

Hot air on a scorching day or cold air in the winter doesn’t make for a comfortable car journey. A dirty condenser coil or low refrigerant levels are probably behind the air temperature problems. It’s easy for this problem to go unnoticed, especially if you’re not using it for long periods of time in the winter.

You may need to take your car to a professional service or garage to have the coil cleaned or the refrigerant topped up.

Rattling Sounds

Your aircon shouldn’t be joining in with your car radio. Rattling or banging noises could indicate that there are loose or worn-out components like your condenser or fan belt. If you’re hearing these noises, you might also see some condensation on your dashboard or find that the air isn’t coming out cold.

Ignoring these sounds can lead to more serious and expensive problems down the line so stay vigilant and get your car down to the mechanic as soon as possible.

Condensation

Excessive condensation coming from your dashboard is a big warning sign that all is not well with your aircon system. It’s more than likely a blocked condensate drain which is the mechanism responsible for removing moisture from the system. This could eventually result in mould growth or electrical issues in extreme cases.

Aircon Regas

If you’re experiencing any of the problems above, consider air-con regassing and lubrication to give your AC system a new lease of life. This is when the old refrigerant gas is removed and replaced with new levels so your air con can run cold again.
