MID and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust’s Pathology team has been shortlisted for the Health Tech Team of the Year award at the HTN Now Awards.

Being a finalist shows the Trust’s outstanding efforts in improving pathology services through innovative digital solutions.

With £20 million funding, the Pathology IT team has transformed the region’s outdated and fragmented pathology systems, ensuring a seamless, efficient process for requesting tests and receiving results.

Uptake in digital use has increased from 33 percent in May 2023 to 80 percent in October 2024. GPs now request pathology tests electronically, eliminating paper referrals and improving quality, which has seen a 20 percent increase in efficiency gains.

The new systems are used by 4,500 or 95% of staff, proving how embedded the new technology is.

Dr Faisal Bin-Reza, Clinical Director of Pathology, said: “We are thrilled to be shortlisted for this award. Our team’s commitment to innovation has had a direct and positive impact on patient care by improving efficiency and reducing delays in test processing.”

The team have already gained national recognition leading to further NHSE funding and have been highly commended by The Royal College of Pathologists.
