THE leader of Thurrock Council’s Conservative group has paid tribute to a former Tory leader following his resignation as a councillor reports the Local Democracy Reporter.

Andrew Jefferies announced on Monday he will step down as a councillor for Ockendon Ward “with immediate effect” just days after he resigned as Tory Group leader.

Last week Mr Jefferies, who took over as council leader following a harrowing period of council financial mismanagement, handed over the reins to Belhus councillor George Coxshall until a new leader can be elected.

Mr Coxshall said his Tory colleague would be missed. He said: “Andrew’s personal circumstances have changed and it’s the right time to make sure the residents of Ockendon have the chance to elect two councillors at once.

“We’re very thankful for his service. He’s going to be very missed from my group.”

Mr Jefferies cited “personal reasons” for his surprise decision, which will result in a by-election in May. In a statement he said: “Due to a change in personal circumstances, the proposed Local Government Review which has seen the planned elections due in May being suspended and with a by-election already pending, it seems the right time to stand down so that both by-elections can be held on the same day.

“I would like to place on record my thanks to all councillors from across the political divide who I have had the pleasure of working with over the last six years and all council officers for their support and dedication.”

Mr Jefferies added: “Finally, I would like to thank the residents of Ockendon for putting their trust and faith in me to represent them. It has truly been an honour and a privilege to call myself Councillor for Ockendon.

“Thurrock has a great future, and I sincerely hope who ever represents Ockendon in the future that they ensure the residents reap the benefits from local government reorganisation in both jobs and prosperity.”

The by-election, planned for Thursday May 1, will be for two seats, following the resignation of Labour councillor Ryan Polston in January.
