BASILDON Council’s Cabinet has unveiled an updated Basildon First Charter, strengthening its commitment to responsible development that puts local residents and businesses first.

Originally launched in 2021, the refreshed Charter aligns with the borough’s evolving priorities, focusing on economic growth, community engagement, sustainability, and good governance. 

The refreshed Basildon First Charter includes a number of key policy commitments designed to improve housing, employment opportunities, environmental sustainability, and community engagement. 

One of the significant updates includes a new provision that requires all new developments across the borough (both for sale and rental) to be marketed exclusively to Basildon residents for up to 12 months before being offered to those living outside of the borough. 

Developers who sign up to the Basildon First Charter will receive official accreditation from Basildon Council, publicly recognising their commitment to responsible development. 

Councillor Jessica Power, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Skills and local Economy said: “The refreshed Basildon First Charter will ensure that Basildon’s growth is driven by the best interests of our residents. By encouraging developers to put Basildon first, we are not only addressing the immediate housing needs of local people but also investing in the long-term prosperity of our borough. 

“This updated charter reflects our commitment to creating sustainable, inclusive, and community-focused developments that will benefit everyone in Basildon.”

The Pillars of the Charter: 

Our Housing Promise – Local Homes for Local People: Ensuring that Basildon residents, particularly key workers and those in need of affordable housing, are prioritised in new developments. 

Our Local Labour Promise – Supporting Skills Development: Committing to employment opportunities for local people and fostering apprenticeships, training schemes, and work placements. 

Our Inclusivity Promise – Sustainable and Inclusive Development: Encouraging environmentally responsible developments that promote accessibility, green spaces, and community health.

Our Supply Chain Promise – Supporting Community Wealth Building: Ensuring that local businesses and suppliers are prioritised in the procurement process to strengthen the local economy. 

Our Communication Promise – Engagement and Transparency: Promoting open communication with residents, businesses, and stakeholders to ensure that all parties are well-informed and involved in the development process. 

Our Place Promise – Enhancing Local Infrastructure and Public Spaces: Focusing on improving public services, green spaces, and transport infrastructure to ensure developments are well-integrated into the community. 

Cllr Power added: “We believe in Basildon and the people who live and work here. This Charter will ensure that in everything we do and every decision we take, we will make sure we are standing up for the borough’s residents.”
