BASILDON Council is launching a targeted enforcement day to address the unlawful use of bikes and e-scooters in Basildon Town Centre. Those caught flouting the rules will face immediate consequences, including having their bikes or e-scooters seized by the police, crushed, and recycled.

Working alongside local police, council enforcement officers will carry out strict measures against anyone violating the regulations.
This move reflects the council’s ongoing commitment to tackling illegal e-bike and e-scooter activity within the town centre. Under the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), the use of motorised vehicles – including e-scooters is prohibited in designated pedestrian areas. Offenders risk an on-the-spot fine of £100.
Cllr Kerry Smith, Cabinet Member for Law, Order & Enforcement, commented:
“Our PSPO clearly bans riding bikes and scooters – electric or otherwise – within the pedestrian zone of the Town Centre. Despite this, we continue to receive numerous complaints from residents, shoppers, and local businesses about delivery riders speeding through the area, posing significant safety hazards.
“Many families, disabled people, older residents, and vulnerable individuals have expressed concerns and now avoid the town centre out of fear of accidents caused by reckless riders.
“This situation is unacceptable, and we are determined to take firm action to protect the safety of everyone in Basildon Town Centre.
“Residents have had enough of these illegal speeding vehicles charging through our town centre. It’s not Le Mans!
