BASILDON was buzzing with football fever recently as Basildon Council, Active Essex, FC Redwing, Achievement Through Football (ATF) and the Football Fun Factory joined forces to host a Big Football Day ‘Roar & Score’ event at Northlands Park.

The celebration was timed perfectly to mark England’s participation in the 2025 Women’s European Championships, giving girls aged 4-14 the chance to enjoy a free afternoon of fun-filled football. From small-sided matches to target challenges, a giant darts board, a speed gun and a beat-the-keeper penalty shootout, there was something for everyone, whether seasoned players or complete beginners picking up a ball for the first time.
The event was designed to be inclusive and welcoming, breaking down barriers to participation by offering every activity completely free of charge. Sian Hillis, Essex County FA Football Development Officer, said: “The Basildon Big Football Day was a fantastic event to celebrate England’s participation in the Women’s Euros by providing more girls in Basildon with the opportunity to access a day full of free football.”
Mark Gordon, Head of Girls’ Football at FC Redwing, added: “FC Redwing were proud to be part of Big Football Day, helping to celebrate the beautiful game with so many amazing young female players, whether experienced or trying football for the first time. It was fantastic to see so much enthusiasm and energy at the event, and we’re excited to welcome brand new sign-ups to both our Wildcats and Squad Girls sessions. Days like this show just how bright the future of girls’ football really is!”
The afternoon was a shining example of how local organisations can work together to inspire the next generation, creating an atmosphere full of energy, smiles and a shared love of the game.
