THURROCK Council is set to extend Tilbury Pier, paving the way for a new river bus service connecting Tilbury to central London reports the Local Democracy Reporter.
The proposed extension includes a floating pontoon and a gangway linking the new structure to the existing Tilbury Landing Stage. The development forms a key part of the Tilbury Town Fund bid, which aims to revitalise the riverside area and strengthen its connection to the town centre.

The new pontoon, measuring 40 metres by 10 metres, will be constructed from modular units joined by keelson beams, allowing for easy maintenance. The berthing face of the pontoon has been designed to accommodate passenger vessels. The pier extension will provide additional berthing space for high-speed ferry services to London and potentially downstream destinations.
Located adjacent to the London International Cruise Terminal, the upgraded landing stage is expected to improve sustainable transport links and boost economic activity in Tilbury. Planning officers have recommended the proposal for approval, noting that while there may be a low level of less-than-substantial harm to designated heritage assets, this is outweighed by the transport and public benefits.
The application follows the closure of the Gravesend to Tilbury foot passenger ferry service earlier this year. The service ceased operations on March 31, 2024, after Thurrock Council and Kent County Council withdrew funding, leading the operator to end the contract.
Council documents state that the new river bus service would offer a modern, efficient alternative for commuters and visitors, helping to reduce road congestion and promote greener travel options. The development is also expected to support local regeneration efforts and improve connectivity between Tilbury and the wider Thames corridor.
A report to the planning committee, which will meet on Tuesday, said: “The proposal to extend the Tilbury Ferry Landing Stage will enhance sustainable river transport links to central London and bring public benefits through improved connectivity.”
If approved, the project will mark a significant step forward in Thurrock’s ambitions to transform Tilbury’s waterfront and re-establish river transport as a viable and attractive option for residents and tourists alike.
In May, the council approved plans to transform Tilbury pier and foreshore.
The scheme, funded from a £22.8 million government grant to deliver projects within the Tilbury Town Investment Plan, aims to transform the area with new seating, pathways and signage.
