A £9 million plan to transform Grays Riverside has been unanimously approved by Thurrock Council’s planning committee reports the Local Democracy Reporter.

Managed by the Grays Town Board, the scheme will see Grays Riverside, between Grays Town Wharf and Tilbury Docks, turned into a stunning community facility with a new walkway, raised flood defence and landscaping.

A striking amphitheatre will be used to soften a new sea wall which will raise the flood defence from 6.8 metres to 7.5 metres.

A pathway will allow people to walk down to the base of the stepped amphitheatre.

The scheme, which forms a major part of the Grays Town Investment Plan, aims to reconnect the town with the River Thames.

Speaking at Tuesday’s meeting, Aaron Green, Labour councillor for West Thurrock and South Stifford, welcomed the proposals.

He said: “It’s a good scheme. It will be good to see that part of Grays actually being regenerated and actually looking better than it currently does. I will be voting in favour.”

Reform councillor Russell Cherry (Ockendon) also backed the plans but stressed the importance of safety and maintenance.

“It sounds a great scheme. The area needs improving, providing there is CCTV to keep people safe, stop antisocial drinking and plenty of bins as well,” he said.

“If it is kept nice, clean and tidy, it will be a great asset for Thurrock.”

Labour councillor Cathy Sisterson (Aveley and Uplands) highlighted the benefits for schools, saying the amphitheatre “looks ideal for a school class or for school trips.”

Committee chairman Michael Fletcher said the project would also strengthen vital flood defences.

“I don’t think since I’ve lived here we’ve had particularly high water levels, but there’s always the possibility,” he said.

“Increasing the seawall level sounds like a sensible and safe move.”

Presenting the scheme on behalf of Thurrock Council, Jan Donovan said the project would create “improved public spaces, better access and high-quality environmental improvements” while tackling antisocial behaviour and boosting footfall along the waterfront.

The development includes new hard and soft landscaping, redesigned routes, widened paths and step-free access.

Kilverts Field, Grays Beach, Riverside Park and the promenade will be linked by uninterrupted walking and cycling routes.

The new amphitheatre will provide a flexible events space, alongside viewing points and seating areas designed to encourage people to spend more time by the river.

Environmental improvements include native planting, enhanced green corridors and measures to protect wildlife habitats. A new 7.5 metre flood defence wall will increase long term resilience to tidal surges.

The project has been financed through the government’s Towns Fund, with £19.9 million allocated to the Grays Town Board.
