A SOUP kitchen to help the homeless is to open up in Grays on Friday night.

The Friends of Essex and London Homeless made the announcement on their Facebook page.

A spokesperson said: “We are pleased and excited to announce that we are trialling a second soup kitchen in Grays this coming Friday and each Friday throughout December.

We were approached by Ashley who is the Minister of the Socketts Heath Baptist Church to see if we could assist in providing what we do in Charing Cross (obviously on a much smaller scale) as we have the knowledge, experience and infrastructure.

“We have taken on the role and will be providing all the foods, clothes, toiletries, sleeping bags etc along with all our equipment to run a successful operation.

With the increase in homelessness, sofa surfers and lots of people generally straddling the poverty line we are really hopefully we can build this soup kitchen and provide much need relief for those in the borough of Thurrock and surrounding areas.

“If you are aware of anyone that you know are have seen sleeping rough or just in need of some food, clothes etc or a shoulder please let them know we will be outside Grays Baptist Church, Orsett Road, Grays setting up at 6pm and will be starting our service around 6.15pm (approx).

“Ashley has kindly compiled a list of volunteers that will be attending across the above weeks so currently we will not require any additional help at this time but should it all go to plan then we may need potential volunteers to join the team watch this space!”

  1. It’s nice to know that there is somewhere for the poor unfortunate homeless people to go but it would be nicer if there wasn’t a need for such a service. Of course, a soup kitchen is only needed because of the rise in homelessness caused by the Tories and their ideological austerity agenda which has been instrumental in pushing thousands into poverty (including those who are in work) as part of a great social engineering project. The Tory mantra – Sod the poor and disadvantaged ’cause we’re alright Jack!

  2. The picture is the Baptist Tabernacle in Grays Orsett Road. The article says it is Socketts Heath Baptist which is different.

  3. Here we go again…Cookie stop blaming the Tories and get your facts right. Under Labour we didn’t have homelessness of course.
Maybe more under Tory rule granted, but you never portray a balanced picture.

  4. Niether do you TGDH.
You wont even criticise the banksters. Or the Tories.
You are a Neoliberal tory drone.

  5. Catching the Bus – I keep telling you to ignore him. He only say crap to get some attention. If he actually paid attention to what I said I did say “the rise in homelessness caused by the Tories” not “the Tories have caused all homelessness”. He’s ignorant and you’ve got to admire his dogged devotion to ignorance.
