Alternative Vote: The Return of Labour?

NEXT May 5th, Thurrock voters will be given the chance to vote on a system of proportional representation. As usual Thurrock will, more than likely, be an anomaly. There is a chance that on the day that the one and only BNP councillor is likely be voted out of office, Thurrock may vote for a system that could lead ten or more in as councillors.

On a national basis, it may mean permanent coalition, it may further insulate MPs in safe seats.

The Electoral Reform Society have published findings on May 10th that show that the Tories would have done even worse at the last election under AV

With AV, they would have been even further from a majority with 25 fewer seats including Thurrock. Jackie Doyle Price’s seat would have gone back to Labour while Stephen Metcalfe is only a list of 78 seats that are marked as highly vulnerable under this system of proportionality as he had less than 45% of the vote.

It will be interesting to see how this one pans out.
