The Royal Horticultural Society Judges were in Bulphan today to inspect the village for ‘The Britain in Bloom’ competition.

Bulphan having won gold last year in the regional, ‘Anglia in Bloom’ competition, were selected to represent the South of England for the prestigious National Prize.

The two judges toured the village for two hours, inspecting for tidiness, flower bed arrangements and community involvement.

They were very impressed with the antique farming implements placed at strategic points in the village together with all the planting arrangements and flowers that have been put into place over the past year by the Bulphan in Bloom members.

Some of the children at Bulphan Primary School came back from their holidays to talk to the judges about their gardening club and showed them the vegetables and flowers they had grown. A special point of interest was the large ‘Insect House’ they had built in the spring from recycled wood.

Everyone involved in the ‘Bulphan in Bloom’ project including sponsors, local dignitaries and members of the community descended on the parish room at Bulphan Church at the end of the morning. They heard from the judges, that they were extremely impressed with what they had seen and stressed the competition was not just about flowers and hanging baskets but a good strength in community spirit which they said we had plenty of and should do very well.

Bulphan will now have to wait until September when the National Awards will be announced at a special ceremony to be held in Birmingham.

They are keeping their fingers crossed !!
