THURROCK Council continued to get tough on truants in the borough with a series of prosecutions at Grays Magistrates today (Thursday).
A South Ockendon mother was given a conditional discharge for one year after it was revealed that her son had only attended 88 out of 136 sessions in a four month period.
Council officers told the court that the mother had failed to attend a whole host of meetings for a variety of reasons. They also informed the court that educational strategies to help the child could not be started as the mother would not return calls or letters.
The mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons made an impassioned appeal to the court.
She said: “I am pleading guilty but it isn’t for the want of trying. Sometimes I have dragged him to school in his pants and socks but he hid in the loft.
“I don’t want him on the dole but when the family are having the house ripped from under them, it is hard.”
