IN response to growing concerns from residents in the South Basildon & East Thurrock constituency, MP James McMurdoch has formally requested detailed updates and greater transparency regarding the ongoing issues surrounding the Stanford-le-Hope station construction project.
In a letter addressed to Councillor John Kent, Leader of Thurrock Council, Mr McMurdoch highlighted the significant delays, rising costs, and management challenges that have plagued the project since the demolition of the old station in 2020. These setbacks have caused frustration among commuters and local businesses, leading to questions about the planning and oversight of the project.

Mr McMurdoch expressed particular concern over the lack of a comprehensive plan for alternative transport arrangements during the construction period, which has resulted in substantial inconvenience for local residents.
He noted that despite a total budget of £29 million, only £13.4 million has been spent to date, raising concerns about the effective use of public funds. With Thurrock Council contributing £17.2 million as the largest financial supporter, MP McMurdoch is urging Councillor Kent to provide clarity on the current status of the project and the utilisation of these funds.
In his letter, MP McMurdoch requested specific details on any plans or strategies that have been implemented to address the challenges associated with the project. He also sought information on the expected timeline for the completion of the works and any actions being taken to mitigate further delays.
He said: “The taxpayers of Thurrock have a right to transparency and accountability regarding the allocation of public funds, and I trust that Councillor Kent shares this commitment,”
Mr McMurdoch looks forward to a prompt response from Councillor Kent and remains committed to ensuring that the concerns of his constituents are addressed.
