Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to show your other half just how much you love and appreciate them. Although you should do this all year long, Valentine’s Day is a good reminder to make sure your partner knows.
Whether you need a getaway to reconnect as you both live busy lives or you are planning to pop the question, there are plenty of destinations right on your doorstep full of romance.
Canterbury, Kent
Canterbury has long been the inspiration for poets, authors and artists with one of the most famous stories being The Canterbury Tales. Although this isn’t a romantic of epic proportions, it highlights the feel of the city.
As you wander the cobbled streets it’s hard not to be impressed by the stunning cathedral looming over the city. Make sure you book a romantic dinner at one of the many intimate and beautiful restaurants such as Café du Soleil on the river. After dinner, you can wander back to your accommodation at a nearby holiday park and enjoy the solitude this affords.

Dedham Vale, Essex
Essex is known for many things but Dedham Vale is not immediately obvious. Somewhat of a hidden gem, this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty inspired the likes of John Constable.
If the weather works in your favour, make sure you take a stroll along the River Stour as well as visit cute little villages like Dedham and Flatford. You can round off an active day with dinner at one of the many cosy country pubs in the area.
Whitstable, Kent
The UK is full of beautiful seaside scenery and Whitstable is arguably one of the best examples. If you fancy a weekend by the sea, then staying near Whitstable will fit the bill.
Whitstable oysters are such a delicacy so you can’t find them fresher than right on the seafront. The Whitstable Oyster Company is a family-run seafood restaurant that prides itself on showcasing the best of the ocean’s wonders.
No stay at the seaside would be complete without a picturesque seaside cottage to call home for a few days. There are several privately rented cottages that will fulfil your wildest dreams.
Cambridge, Cambridgeshire
Although it is a little bit further afield, a trip to Cambridge’s historic and academic streets is worth the extra driving.
Cambridge is full of history which can be dated back to 875AD, and this permeates every brick and stone as you wander the streets. For a unique experience, take a punt on the River Cam and take in the sights from the waterside.
There are plenty of boutique hotels in the city for you to relax in which offer a seamless blend of modern comfort and historical charm.
Rye, East Sussex
Rye is a medieval town packed with character. The cobbled street, antique shops and historic inns will keep you coming back for more.
Make sure you have time to visit Mermaid Steet which has been named one of the prettiest streets in the UK as well as one of the most photographed. It is a bit of a steep climb so make sure to stop at the famous Mermaid Inn for a breather.
Mermaid Street can get busy so if you want a bit of alone time as a couple, head to the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. Here you can get lost in the tranquillity of nature and enjoy each other’s company.
