A dedicated supporter of St. Luke’s Hospice has won the £2,000 cash prize in the Local Hospice Lottery, turning a regular act of giving into an unexpected moment of joy.
Rita Ellis, from Billericay, has been playing the Local Hospice Lottery for a number of years to support of St. Luke’s Hospice, after her father, Victor Radford, was cared for by the charity.
The win came as a complete shock. Rita says: “I was surprised to receive the call – I just couldn’t believe it at first. Once it sank in, I was so excited, and my grandchildren were thrilled too!
“I play the Local Hospice Lottery as a way to support the work of St. Luke’s Hospice. They cared for my father six years ago and the level of care they provided was incredible. They even came at night to help with his injections. I was genuinely surprised and moved by how far they went to make him comfortable.”
Rita’s commitment to give back extends beyond playing the Local Hospice Lottery. Rita has included a gift in her Will to the Hospice and is donating part of her lottery winnings to the charity. The rest of the jackpot will go towards helping her grandson, who is preparing for a charity trip to Cambodia, and towards a well-earned break.
Rita said: “I’m putting some aside for the grandchildren and hope to book a holiday for me and my husband. He’s living with Alzheimer’s and I’m his full-time carer, so this win has been an uplifting moment for me and my family.”
