THE Leader of Basildon Council has strongly condemned the recent acts of vandalism and offensive graffiti that have appeared in public areas, urging residents to express their patriotism in a respectful and lawful manner.

Cllr Gavin Callaghan said:

“While the council supports freedom of expression – including the display of national flags on private property – defacing public spaces and property is illegal. In particular, painting over road crossings poses a real danger to both pedestrians and motorists.

“This is vandalism, plain and simple. It diverts public funds away from essential services and into cleaning up damage that should never have occurred in the first place.”

Under the Highways Act 1980, local authorities have the power to remove any writing, marking or signage that has been unlawfully placed on public highways.

Cllr Callaghan added:

“I’ve been made aware of racist and offensive graffiti appearing in some of our public spaces – this is absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

“The council has also received feedback from some residents about the recent display of St George’s flags and other markings in parts of the borough. While we recognise and support national pride when it is expressed in an inclusive and respectful way, we also understand that some displays have caused concern due to perceived associations with racism or intimidation.

“We want to make it absolutely clear: there is no place for racism, hate speech or intimidation in Basildon. We are proud of our diverse and welcoming community, and we are committed to ensuring all residents feel safe and respected.”

The council will continue to work with community safety partners to monitor the situation and take appropriate action where symbols, graffiti or flags are used in a way that causes offence or fear. Offensive material will be removed immediately.

“Let’s celebrate our national identity with pride — but also with mutual respect and consideration for our neighbours,” Cllr Callaghan concluded.
