OFFICES used by a shipping firm could be converted into a new eye clinic offering outpatient services reports the Local Democracy Reporter.

SpaMedica is proposing the new clinic in the office space used by Cardinal Maritime Limited, Christopher Martin Road, Basildon. The offices are in Phoenix House, which is adjacent to the A127 and located within Honywood Road Business Park.

The plans include face-to-face consultations for specialists to advise patients on the procedures carried out at the main hub sites, Romford and Brentwood. The firm has applied for a certificate to confirm that the site can be legally used for medical appointments. The plans state that official planning permission is not required.

The firm says the new clinic would help increase the speed patients can be treated, with the operations carried out at the other locations. The plans state: “There are many benefits to employing the ‘hub and spoke’ model, including increased efficiency, enhanced quality of care, and improved access to specialised services, particularly in areas which are poorly resourced. The nearest SpaMedica hospital is in Romford, approximately 15 miles east, and therefore Suite 2 Phoenix House would be used as a consultation space to save their clients travelling for less urgent appointments.”

According to the website, SpaMedica is one of the leading providers of NHS eye patient services and, in 2018, it became the largest NHS cataract surgeryprovider in the UK. The company says: “We believe in giving people the best advice and choices to help improve their vision and pride ourselves on providing a high standard of patient care. ” The medical firm also has a site in Chelmsford.
