THE Essex Police Business Crime Team is urging anyone thinking of turning to crime in the run-up to Christmas to think again.
“December is a time when financial and social pressures can feel overwhelming,” says Sergeant Christian Denning.
“Christmas can be a difficult time for many but stealing will only make things worse.

“If you’re struggling, please reach out for help – asking for that is never a weakness. There are food banks, charities and community groups across Essex which can help to support you and your family.
“Please don’t run the risk of starting 2026 with a criminal conviction.”
Christian also asks people to look out for friends and neighbours this festive season. “A little help can make a big difference,” he adds.
In the first four days of December, the force’s officers have already made 24 arrests for shop theft across Essex. Many of those arrested have been charged with shop theft and some will already have appeared at court and admitted the offences.
Food banks, community fridges & pantries and organisations such as the Salvation Army, FoodCycle and local churches can provide food and, in some cases, free meals.
If you’re on a low income or are in receipt to benefits, you may be able to apply to the Household Support and Essential Living funds administered by local councils. Citizens Advice can also help you to access benefits, grants and emergency support.
