A SERVING Essex Police officer has been dismissed for gross misconduct after making false reports to police and an insurance company regarding the alleged theft of a vehicle.

An accelerated misconduct hearing, chaired by Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington at Essex Police Headquarters in Chelmsford, which took place on 17 and 24 November, found that the officer’s actions breached the standards of professional behaviour relating to Honesty & Integrity and Discreditable Conduct. The hearing concluded that the officer’s conduct amounted to gross misconduct and resulted in dismissal.

Chief Constable Harrington said: “The cornerstone of officers’ training is honesty and integrity, on which the public’s confidence and trust is based. This foundation is integral to all we do. When an officer goes against that principle, not only does it undermine the rule of law, but it erodes the very trust that policing depends on.”

To ensure there is no prejudice to ongoing criminal proceedings, the hearing was held in private, and the findings and outcome will remain reserved until the conclusion of those proceedings, at which point they will be published on the Essex Police website.
