THE next generation of community leaders took centre stage as members of the James Hornsby High School Student Council met with Cllr Emma Callaghan and the school’s Senior Leadership Team to share their ideas, ambitions and pride in their local area on Tuesday 17 March.

The meeting was marked by incredible energy, confidence and positivity, with students demonstrating why they are truly leaders of the future.

Central to the discussion was Pride in Place, a programme focused on celebrating Laindon’s heritage while investing in a vibrant and inclusive future. Students spoke passionately about their pride in Laindon, but also their desire to see it continue to grow as a place where people feel connected and inspired.

Key themes raised by the Student Council included:

  • Celebrating Laindon’s heritage and identity, including the use of murals and public art
  • Enhancing the natural environment to support wellbeing and healthy lifestyles
  • More accessible sporting opportunities, particularly for beginners and young people trying something new
  • The importance of the arts, with more places to create, rehearse and perform
  • Festivals and events that bring communities together and celebrate diversity
  • Safe, welcoming spaces for young people – places to learn, spend time together, be active, perform and feel comfortable being themselves

Students also highlighted pride in the area’s world‑renowned musical heritage, referencing Depeche Mode and Alison Moyet as powerful examples of global success rooted locally. They spoke about how celebrating this legacy through music, performance and festivals could inspire young people and strengthen community identity.

The conversation reinforced the importance of ensuring young voices are central to shaping future investment and community activity.

Cllr Emma Callaghan, Cabinet Member for Partnerships, Performance & Engagement said:

“The passion and confidence shown by the pupils at James Hornsby High School is incredible. They spoke with real clarity about what Laindon means to them and the future they want to help shape.

“Their ideas highlight what matters most to young people – belonging, opportunity, creativity and safe, welcoming spaces.

“The Pride in Place programme is about shaping our communities together, and listening to young people is a vital part of that. Their ideas show how important it is to invest in places where people feel connected, inspired and proud to live.”

The meeting forms part of a wider commitment through Pride in Place to listen to residents, support creativity, strengthen community connections and ensure Laindon continues to be a place where people of all ages can thrive.
