Thurrock 0 v 1 Sutton United

Bill Robinson reports from Ship Lane….

Another late goal sunk Thurrock in a poor game that failed to keep even the hardiest supporter entertained. Sutton needed the points to keep their play off chances on track, whilst Thurrock needed a good performance as points at this stage seem incidental to the inevitable relegation awaiting them.

The first half saw both sides struggle to create openings and the first chance of the game fell to David Knight, who flicked a header towards goal from a corner but found it blocked but the Sutton defence. The only other moment of note came from Ahmed Deen, whose right foot curler went just over Kevin Scriven’s bar.

The second half was no better, but the home side created a clear cut chance after 51 minutes when Kyle Asante made a break down the right flank and his cross fund Sam Cutler around the penalty spot and should have scored, but he failed to connect cleanly with his left foot. Another chance came Thurrock’s way on 75 minutes when Lee Boyland sent Asante clear, but the forward clipped his shot into the side netting.

Sutton got the winner in the 85th minute, a break down the right saw Luke I’Anson foul Harry Beautyman on the very edge of the penalty box, when the cross came over it went deep to the far post a number of heads and boots tried to clear and score before the ball fell to Kyle Vassell who drove the ball home from close range to take the points.

Thurrock: David Hughes, Paul Terry, Luke I’Anson, Rob Gilman, Nathan Ashton, Stuart Thurgood, Sam Cutler, Ben Hunt, David Knight, Kyle Asante, Ahmed Deen.

Subs: Lee Boylan, Jamie Davis, Ben Bowditch,
