THE current Formula One season may well be underway, but for one local writer it is the history of the sport which is more appealing. Lloyd Bonson has had a keen interest in cars since an early age and has spent his working life involved with the motor industry, including work with two championship winning race teams. He has now put pen to paper and utilised some of that passion for a new book called “One Hit Wonders: The Story of One Off Grand Prix Winners”.
The idea for the book came during the 2008 Formula One season, when a number of drivers took their maiden victory. “From an historical perspective, 2008 was an amazing year as the likes of Robert Kubica, Hekki Kovalinen and even the current World Champion Sebastian Vettel all took won their first Grand Prix that year.” explained Lloyd, “This got me thinking about all the drivers who only managed to do that on one occasion and why was that the case.”
Three years on, and in-between normal working commitments Lloyd has managed to put research and put together a comprehensive look at drivers and teams who have just a single victory to their name since the formation of the World Championship in 1950.
Available as an eBook since December, Lloyd has been pleased with the sales so far, “On Amazon it has peaked at number 5 in the UK Motor Sport eBooks and at number 3 in Germany for English Sports eBooks.” This has given Lloyd the confidence to release a paperback version of the book via self-publishing giant CreateSpace, in an attempt to reach a larger audience.
The paperback is now available via Lloyd’s own website, www.lloydbonson.com or via Amazon, with more distribution avenues being explored.
