HISTORY was made last night (Wednesday) when Grays Thurrock councillor, Yash Gupta became the first Asian mayor of Thurrock.

“My dream has become a reality” said Yash as, surrounded by family and friends, he took the chains of office.

The new mayor has made a remarkable journey over the last fifty years and becoming mayor of Thurrock is clearly the culmination of all those achievement.

Mayor Gupta made a commitment in his acceptance speech to community engagement.

The mayor also announced that his chosen charities would be St Luke’s hospice and the Thurrock Community Chest.

  1. Why does Thurrock require a Mayoral position? we have a Leader and Cabinet model in Thurrock not a Directly elected mayor model, so therefore the Mayoral role is only really a ceremonial one, the Leader of the council does the day to day running with his cabinet.

In times of austerity and council cuts the Mayoral position with all the trappings is one expense that Thurrock could really do without, unless I am missing the whole point of a Thurrock mayor??

  2. No you are not missing the point Lambo,it’s an outdated office one which as u say in times of austerity is neither cost effecttive or needed.

  3. Long time Grays resident that I am, very proud of Mr Gupta. What a hard working and cheerful young man. Well done Yash, you have my no.1 every time.
