OVER 300 people turned out last Sunday for a sunny afternoon out in the woods in South Ockendon.

There was a lot to see and do for the whole family in the woods. Animals were the main attraction, with heavy horse logging demonstrations from Hawthorn Heavy Horses, animals from Wellgate Community Farm, and falconry from Owls N Pals. Chainsaw carver Ben Loughrill also created an owl from a piece of wood, which will be kept in the woods.

There were also plenty of fun things for visitors to have a go at, including campfire cooking, shelter building and willow weaving. Crazy bikes, a smoothie bike and a bouncy castle also provided lots of fun for youngsters.

Thurrock’s South Ockendon Housing team supported the event and spent the day meeting local residents. They also brought along parkour specialists Team Traceur, who were a real hit with local teens.

Look out for the next Mardyke Woods open day in March 2015!
