Athletics: Young Harriers get their chance indoors

    Minithon – Lee Valley October 11th

    Young athletes from Thurrock Harriers had their first go at competitions this month, after taking part in a minithon at the Lee Valley Stadium on October 11th.

    In the Year 4 & 5 age group, the boys took part in three events, ranging from Long jump, shot put and short and long races, earning points along the way.

    Jack Warren came 5th overall after taking part in Long Jump, 200m and the 600m. Joseph Omowanile competed in Long jump, 60m and 200m and Oreaanuoluwa Adepegba took part in shot put, 60m and the vertical Jump.

    The girls also took part in three events each, this time a choice between the 60m Hurdles, 60m, 200m and Long Jump.

    Alana Hunter & Olivia Grace Vickers both took part in Long Jump, 60m and 60m Hurdles. Lillie Toms did the 200m, as well as Long Jump and the 60m Hurdles. Deamilola Akolede ran well in the 200m.

    Year 6 & 7 Boys, also competed in a variety of events, taking part in three events.

    Oreofeoluwa Adepegba came 1st overall in the competition, earning 190 points overall after competing in 60m, High jump and the 200m. Francis Omowanile did well in the 60m, 60m hurdles and 200m. Aaron Akomlede took part in Long jump, 60m and 60m hurdles, finally Jakub Kawalski scored points by throwing in shot putt, 60m’s and Long jump.

    All did very well, in what was for most, their very first competition and all the coaches and parents are proud of how well they did on the day.

    Pentathlon/Eastern Athletic Association Multiple Events Championships – Peterborough

    Thurrock Harriers athletes took part in the Eastern Athletic Association Multiple Events Championships at Peterborough at the end of last month.

    Under 15 boy Theo Adesina, not only brought back a silver medal, coming 2nd in the East, he also gained 3 PBs in 80m hurdles (11.92s) Shot put (10.81m) and his overall Pent score of 2603. Kayode Odumosu also brought home a bronze medal, coming 3rd in the East with a whooping 5 PBs on the day, 800m (2.28.06s) Shot put (10.03m) Long Jump (5.11m) 80m Hurdles (12.40s) and an overall Pent score of 2365. William Adeyeye also took part but did not finish on the day, due to injury.

    Under 15 Girls also took part. Funminyi Olajide brought home a PB in Shot put (9.82m), while Jessica Whitbread gained a PB in High jump (1.35m) Rhea Stavri had a very successful day with a whooping 4PB’s in Shot put (7.02m) High Jump (1.26m) Long Jump (4.15m) and an overall Pent score of 1836.

    The Under 13’s also took part in a minthon on the day, the girls competed in Hurdles, Long Jump and Shot putt. Although no PBs were gained in that age group by our girls. Ruby Bridger came 2nd in Shot putt and Sola Taiwo came 1st in the Hurdles race, bringing her in at 4th in the East overall.

    Daniel Ogutuga, Under 13 Boy, came 1st in the East overall, bringing home a Gold medal along with 2 PB’s one in Long Jump (5.13m) and the other in Shot Put (10.16m).

    Under 17 Women, Maisy Webb gained a PB in the 800m (3.50.45s) and an overall pent score of 1343, coming 5th in the East. Liberty Milne brought home 2 PB’s, one in high Jump (1.05m) and another in 800m (3.29.91s) coming 6th in the East overall.

    Although this was the last event of the season, all athletes did well whilst representing the club. Both the coaches and parents are very proud of their achievements not only at this competition but throughout the year.

    SportsHall Athletics – Round 1 – Oct 14th 2015

    **Sportshall is an Indoor athletics competition format for 9 to 15 year olds which offers local, regional and national competitions in track, relays & field events.

    Various Thurrock Harriers athletes took part in the first round of Sportshall Athletics on Sunday October 14th which was held at Coopers in Upminster. Under 11 Girl Madeleine Read took part in chest push, standing long Jump and 2 lap race, coming 2nd in her heat. Toula Stavri came 1st in her 1 lap race, also taking part in the standing Long Jump, High Stepper and Speed bounce.

    Under 11 boy, Sean Emeka Ugwuadu came 3rd in Chest push, he also took part in High stepper, target throw and the 1 lap race. Oreanvoluwa Adepegba did the vertical Jump, Chest push and 2 lap race.

    In the Under 13 Girls events Ruby Bridger came 1st in her 4 lap race, she also had a go at the linear shot and the standing long Jump. Sola Taiwo also came first in Standing Triple jump and her 2 lap race, she also took part in standing Long jump and linear shot. Funmini Adewole had a go at the 2 lap race, Speed bounce and standing Long Jump.

    Under 13 boys had a good turn out with 6 members of Thurrock harriers competing. Daniel Oguntuga came 1st in his 2 lap race, vertical jump and Linear Shot, he also took part in Standing Long jump. Oreofe Adepegba participated in Linear shot, standing long Jump, vertical Jump and came 1st in his 4 lap race. Gbenda Adewole took part in Linear shot, Standing long jump and the 2 lap race. Jakub Kowalski took part in 4 events, the Standing Long Jump, standing triple jump, speed bounce and 2 lap race. Brothers Liam Norcott and Teddy Norcott took part in standing Long jump, speed bounce, Teddy came 2nd in his 6 lap race, whilst Liam came 3rd in his 4 lap race.

    Under 15 Girl, Jessica Whitbread came joint 1st in linear shot and her 2 lap race with a competitor from Chelmsford. she also took part in Standing Long Jump and Standing Triple jump. Rhea Stavri did well in her events, the linear shot, standing triple jump and 4 lap race.

    Under 15 boy, Kayode Odumosu came 1st in Linear shot and Standing Long Jump, he also took part in the 2 lap race and the vertical jump. Liam Chivers took part in the 2 lap race and linear shot, he came first in the standing long jump.

    The next round is ay Swenye Park school in Rayleigh on the 14th November. In order to be considered for the Essex team for the Regional Final Under 11 & Under 13 athletes should compete in two of the three fixtures, preferably including the final round at Chelmsford in December. Under 15s should compete in at least one fixture, preferably the final round.
