POLICE are warning lorry drivers to be aware following an increase in the number of thefts from lorries in the Thurrock area.

Between April and November this year there have been 36 thefts from HGVs in the West Thurrock and Purfleet areas. Locations that have been repeatedly targeted by thieves include the Oliver Close and Watson Close area and Moto Services in Thurrock and the Meads Service Station Purfleet.

The thefts generally take place at night when the drivers are asleep and items stolen have included alcohol, shoes and cosmetics.

PC Paul Armstrong said: “There are a number of steps that lorry drivers can take to protect themselves and their vehicles from theft. I would advise them to park in official lorry parks and avoid dark, remote areas.

“Leaving a cab curtain open and if not carrying a load, leaving the cargo doors open, can help to deter thieves. Security equipment to protect HGVs is also available to buy online. Anything suspicious should be reported to police on 101, or 999 in an emergency.”
