THE internationally renowned and Thurrock-based South Essex Rape and Incest Crisis Centre (SERICC) has called for urgent talks with Essex Police over their handling of child abuse cases.

The call comes after YT exclusively revealed that the force were under investigation over its handling of 30 cases involving 57 victims.

A detective has been suspended and eleven others have been placed on restricted duties whilst external bodies investigate.

Senior officer at Sericc, Sheila Coates told YT. "I have asked for a meeting with the police and crime commissioner, Nick Alston.

"There are a number of issues that we need to discuss."

Thurrock Council has also pledged its support to anyone who may come forward in the light of the revelations.

A spokesperson said: "Of course we would support anybody who came forward alleging abuse, but it is worth noting that all the cases cited by Essex Police are in the north of the county."
