Purfleet Parking Permit Plan

PEOPLE living close to the railway station at Purfleet are being asked their views about setting up a permit parking area.

Thurrock Council has received complaints about non-residents parking all day on streets in the area, making it difficult for people living there to park close to home and causing problems for traffic along London Road.

A permit parking area allows those with a valid permit to park anywhere within the area without the need for specific parking bays or yellow lines.

However, for safety reasons, some yellow line restrictions will be introduced.

Local councillor and portfolio holder for transport, Cllr Oliver Gerrish, said: “This is something I’ve been concerned about for quite some time.

“Parking issues involving commuters are creating real problems for local people, and we want to see the situation dealt with.”

He added: “The solution has to be something that works for local people and so we need to make sure that we take their views into account – hence the consultation.

“I would urge as many people as possible to respond to the consultation. They should all be receiving a letter and explanation through the post and it is important they take part and feedback so their views are properly considered.”

The permit area would include much of London Road along with Church Hollow and roads that feed off it. In addition, to the east, it takes in Beacon Hill, Oakhill Road and Linnet Way.

The proposed permits will follow current council policy which is for up to two resident permits and the first sheet of visitor parking permits – 20 visits of up to five hours – free. Further resident permits cost £66 and further sheets of 20 visitor permits cost £6. Thurrock Council stopped charging for these a couple of years ago.

Pre-paid envelopes are included for consultation responses and the closing date is Tuesday, 23 June.

People are being asked whether they want to see the area created and any comments they may have on it.
