A PETITION has been started after planning permission has been granted for the demolition of a South Ockendon public house.
Permission was given on May 2nd, for the demolition of existing public house, the Prince of Wales in West Road, South ockendon and outbuilding, erection of 1 x studio flats, 4 x 1 bedroom flats and 4 x 2 bedroom flats with 12 parking spaces.
The petition states: The building was built in the eighteen hundreds, it has been a public house since 1851 at least, although in the past few years it was bought and turned into a private dwelling with a shop.
"The building is of a timber frame design retaining quite a few original features. There is not much left of the old South Ockendon and what is left the council are slowly destroying.
"This particular building has planning permission for 9 flats and 12 parking spaces! Ockendon is one big building site, with an infrastructure that can not cope.
"Save Ockendon, save The Prince of Wales!.
The petition has gained over 250 signatures in the last few days.
Trevor Oliver, father of TV chef, Jamie Oliver once ran the pub in the seventies. He then went on to the The Cricketers in Clavering and the rest is history.
Do you have any special memories of The Prince of Wales?
Do you feel it should be saved or perhaps you think it should be demolished for new homes?
