HUNDREDS of Thurrock students would have been nervously checking online or tearing open envelopes on Thursday (13 August) to get their ‘A’ Level results.

Thurrock Council Leader and education portfolio holder, Cllr John Kent, said: “In a year when early signs suggested national pass rate figures – particularly in maths and science subjects – would be significantly lower, Thurrock has bucked the trend with every academy 6 form students achieving 100% pass rate.

He added: “I know the vast majority of our students have achieved the grades they needed to progress to their next step, be it university, further study, or employment.

“And that’s the point … that’s education done right. The results on those pages don’t really matter unless they help our young people get to the step on their journey.

“For some of our students wishing to study medicine or attend one of the most competitive Russell Group universities, top grades were a must, but they delivered.

“I’d like to give special congratulations to some of Thurrock’s students at Harris Academy, in particular Marcus Abiona, Jay Afruz, Sehifa Ali and Matthew Davis who all successfully gained a place at their first choice universities after getting two A* and an A.”

He added “Equally, I’m thrilled that in the first year of entries at Ockendon not only did every one of their students achieve passes but over 40 per cent were graded A or B.

“And it wasn’t just Ockendon, three of Thurrock’s academies can now boast a 100 per cent pass rate.

“I feel very proud of our students who have managed to achieve these excellent results and we should also thank the heads, the teachers and the leadership teams as well as the support staff.

“And we must also thank the parents and carers for the hard work they will have put in too – I know this one from personal experience this year!”

Cllr Kent said: “We should also recognise the hard work of those students who completed vocational courses and gained qualifications to help them succeed in the world of work.

“And, finally, we should remember that for some the results may not have been as good as expected.

“In these cases, don’t be disheartened, there are options. The Clearing system works quite well these days and or, if you’re not sure what to do next, contact Thurrock Careers for impartial and free, advice and guidance about your choices.”
