PARALYMPIC gold medallist Danny Crates is set to start a 5km fun run at DP World London Gateway Logistics Park in September.

The event is being organised and hosted by DP World London Gateway’s engineering apprentices at the Stanford-le-Hope facility, to raise money in aid of Little Havens Hospice.

Born in Orsett, Danny is an 800m specialist and a former Paralympic world record holder. He won gold medals in a number of international competitions, including at the 2004 Paralympic Games, European Championships and World Championships.

He is encouraging everyone and anyone to dust off their running shoes and take part in the charity run on Sunday, September 20, which begins at 10.30am from No.1 London Gateway.

Participants will be taken on a route around the DP World London Gateway Logistics Park, adjacent to Britain’s newest deep-sea container terminal, with its huge quay cranes and state-of-the-art technology.

Port customer Del Monte Fresh Produce, one of the world’s leading producers and distributors of fresh fruit and vegetable products, is kindly supporting the event and will be providing fresh bananas and other goodies for participants.

It is hoped the fun run will raise a significant amount of money for Little Haven’s Hospice, which provides support and care for children, and their families, across Essex who have a life-limiting condition.

Entry into the fun run will be £10 for adults and £8 for children under 16, with all proceedings donated to Little Haven’s Hospice.

After the race, medals will be handed to all participants as a token of appreciation for taking part.

Danny Crates, 800m gold medal winner at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens, said: “I am really looking forward to starting the DP World London Gateway Fun Run. This is a great opportunity for local people of all ages to take part in a fun, healthy activity while raising vital funds for a very worthy cause.

“In addition, the DP World London Gateway Port and Logistics Park is a very exciting development and this is a good chance to see it up close.”

Tanya King, Corporate Fundraiser, Havens Hospices, said: “We are extremely grateful to the staff at DP World London Gateway Port and Logistics Park for organising this fun run event in aid of Little Havens Hospice.

“At Little Havens we provide respite, symptom management and end of life care to seriously ill children across the county completely free of charge. This is only possible thanks to people and companies in the community who take part in fundraising activities like this fun run.

“It is not the first time the team at DP World London Gateway has supported the charity and we are delighted that they are continuing to support the work we do. Together, we are making every day count.”
