PORTFOLIO Holder for Environment, Cllr Pauline Tolson, visited a local sandwich shop to congratulate them on receiving their 5 food and hygiene award last week.

Speaking last Wednesday (21 September) she said: “The question everyone should ask before ordering food anywhere is how clean is this place?

“Many outlets nowadays display their ratings in their window or by their till even though there is no legal requirement to do so.

“This is really good practice – food outlets should be proud their inspection has deemed their good food quality practices are in place– but it makes you wonder about outlets who don’t display their ratings?

“Why would you put a good result in a drawer or hide it away?”

The Food Standards Agency are considering on making it mandatory for premises to display their rating, but in the meanwhile, you can check all ratings at food.gov.uk/ratings.

“It is really good you can see the standards online – I know the website works well on mobile devices too which is helpful when you’re out and about.”

Tony Callum, owner of Freshfill in Grays said: “A 5 rated review shows people that we are doing what we should be doing.

“We have to go through a process to make sure we are supplying the best service we can to our customers but we also aim to make sure we are giving our customers the best quality food too. We have always done it this way and will continue to do it this way.”
