George Formby Appreciation Society

By Lucy Chipperfield

The Legend of George Formby Lives On!

‘When I’m Cleaning Windows’ and ‘Leaning on a Lamp Post’ are only two of the legendary hits that were performed at the George Formby Appreciation Society last weekend. And it was truly delightful!

Admittedly, I didn’t know much about George Formby before my visit. Nevertheless, the moment I arrived at Tyrells Hall Club in Tilbury, I was instantly captivated by this ukulele legend and all-round entertainer.

Every member of the society was incredibly dedicated to celebrate the memory of George Formby and the wonderful work that he produced. Throughout the afternoon, the stage was constantly being used by the members who performed hit after hit of classic Formby songs, as well as many other ukulele inspired tunes.

All I can say is, I may not have known who George Formby was at first, but after that amazing afternoon he will definitely be an essential on my Ipod from now on.

I would like to thank each and every member of the George Formby Appreciation Society for welcoming yourthurrock to join in the celebrations. It was a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining afternoon!

The George Formby Appreciation Society meet every second Saturday of each month at the Tyrells Hall Club in Tilbury.

On that note, I will see you next month for some more ukulele-loveliness!
