One armed with a gun threatened the security guard and took a cash box believed to have contained £10 notes totalling a five-figure sum.
The 42-year-old security guard from Chelmsford was uninjured.
Police believe they were travelling in a dark coloured car which had blacked out windows.
They are appealing for anyone with details about the suspects or the vehicle they were travelling in to contact them.
In particular they would like information about the vehicle’s whereabouts prior to and after the offence took place.
Anyone with information should contact Dc Paul O’Callaghan, at Tilbury CID on 0300 333 4444.
